How do I keep my private number plate safe on my vehicle?
Many assume that having their private registration on a vehicle is enough protection. However, several risks can jeopardise your ownership. Follow these steps to protect your registration.
Secure Your V5C (Vehicle Registration Certificate/Logbook)
- If you cannot find your V5C, order a duplicate (apply using form V62 ) as soon as possible. This application invalidates the original certificate number, meaning that if someone has access to the original, they won’t be able to steal your cherished mark by attempting to assign it online to their vehicle.
- Keep your V5C safe at home.
- Never leave it in your vehicle in case it is stolen. - The V5C reference number is required to retain the registration mark online, never share it.
Keep your Address Up to date with the DVLA
- The DVLA only contacts you via your registered postal address.
- If you change addresses and fail to update your V5C, you might miss important updates to their policies and processes which will go to your old address.
Legally Display Your Number Plates
- Always ensure your number plates comply with DVLA regulations. Plates must follow the correct spacing, font, and size requirements. - Misuse, such as altering characters or using an illegal font, can result in a fine of up to £1,000 plus the confiscation of your registration mark. - The DVLA and police rely on Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to detect vehicle identities, and non-compliant plates disrupt this system.
Always Get Number Plates Made Up Safely
When buying new number plates, always use a government RNPS (Registered Number Plate Supplier) to ensure your plates are legally produced and correctly formatted. Don’t share your DVLA documents with any non-registered supplier.
